A CHRISTMAS ACTIVITY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Writer's picture: Jonathan HodginsJonathan Hodgins

Christmas can be fun for all the family, with everyone rockin’ around the Christmas tree whilst roasting chestnuts on open fires. Yet today, it seems harder to find something everyone enjoys. Even if you can afford a visit to a Winter Wonderland, there’s no guarantee it will be worth the money. A Christmas movie sounds nice if you can agree on one. Making Christmas cookies together? Let’s face it, the chaos isn’t worth the calories.

What we want is something traditional that connects with all ages and doesn’t cost any money. So may I suggest a church carol service? I know what you’re thinking, but hear me out. This ticks all your boxes.

Carol services are traditional. Welsh people have been going to church at Christmas for a thousand years so you’ll be a part of history. Carols are a part of our heritage, recorded by great singers from Elvis Presley to Beyonce. You sang them yourself at school so you’ll be connecting with your own history too.

The Christmas story connects with all ages. The story of a young couple filled with fear and excitement of a baby on its way. There are scientists, politicians, farmers and pensioners involved too. It’s a story of hope over fear and light in the darkness, something we all need to hear. (Top tip: I’ve been organising Christmas services for twenty years. Your family will grumble beforehand but they’ll be glad they came in the end).

Best of all carol services are free! Not just the event itself but the coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, stollen, mulled wine or whatever else they offer you at the end.

Will you consider it? You’ll do lots this Christmas and hopefully most of it will be fun. Make sure you do one thing that’s memorable and go along to church.
